Escalating costs force pharmacy to close 'with heavy heart’ after 14 years

An independent pharmacy in Kent has said “escalating costs” have left it with no choice but to close next month after 14 years.

Central Pharmacy and Clinic in Northdown Road in Cliftonville, Margate, said in a post on Facebook that after years of “dedicated service” to its community, it was “with a heavy heart” that it had decided to close.

It said “difficult negotiations with suppliers and the NHS” as well as “increasing concerns about the safety of staff” had made it “impossible” to continue.

“Furthermore, the costs associated with providing extended hour services for the NHS have significantly impacted our ability to remain profitable and continue offering free services to the community,” the pharmacy said.

It told patients all NHS prescriptions received until January 31 can be collected until February 3 from the pharmacy. Insisting it had faced “insurmountable” challenges, it said it had “reached a point where continuing to operate is no longer viable.”

“This decision was not made lightly. It comes after much reflection and careful consideration of what is best for our staff, customers, and ourselves,” the pharmacy said.

“While it is undeniably sad to see a business that has thrived for so many years come to an end. Sustainable provision of pharmacy service remains responsibility of the local NHS.”

Central Pharmacy thanked its “loyal customers” for their “trust and support over the years” and its “dedicated staff whose hard work and commitment have been the backbone” of its success.
